This study examines social transformation and cultural relations in the development of Qur’anic exegesis studies in Indonesia, focusing on the shift in exegetical approaches influenced by social, political, and cultural dynamics. From the colonial period to the reform era, Qur’anic interpretation in Indonesia has evolved alongside changes in social and political structures, leading to the emergence of new approaches such as contextual and thematic interpretations. This research integrates theories of social transformation, cultural relations, hermeneutics of tafsir, and the sociology of knowledge to analyze how Qur’anic interpretation adapts to socio-political changes. Based on preliminary data from interviews, questionnaires, and observations in various religious educational institutions, the study finds that tafsir in Indonesia is influenced not only by the Qur’anic text but also by the surrounding social and cultural context. The study aims to explain how Indonesian tafsir interacts with socio-political changes and how exegetes adapt their interpretations to address contemporary issues such as pluralism, human rights, and democracy. This research contributes to the development of tafsir studies by introducing a more contextual and multidisciplinary approach, as well as offering a new perspective on the role of Qur’anic interpretation in responding to modern-day challenges.
